Dr. Alwan Minister of Health Republic of Iraq
Health Promotion


A native of Baghdad, Dr. Alwan received his medical degree from the Alexandria Medical College in Egypt and post graduate degrees from the United Kingdom.
He is an associate member of Royal Medical College in London and Glasgow, as well as an associate in Public Health College in London. After returning to Iraq in 1976, he worked in the Ministries of Health and Higher Education.

He also served as Dean of and Professor at the Medical College at Al-Mustansariya University.
He left Iraq in January 1992 and became the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Jordan and Oman Kingdom and then served as the head of the department of chronic and non-contagious diseases at WHO in Geneva. He served as Minister of Education from September 2003 until June 1 st . 2004 where he was appointed as the Minister of Health.

Dr. Alwan and his wife have three daughters.
