Health Promotion

Through its system of 240 Hospitals and more than 1200 Primary Health Centers, the Iraqi Ministry of Health (MOH) is responsible for the health and well-being of the people of Iraq. The MOH is the primary provider of health care for more than 25 million Iraqi people. It also is responsible for pharmaceutical acquisitions and distribution, management of ancillary services, and public health services within the country.

Among MOH facilities are hospitals, Primary Health Centers (PHC), pharmaceutical warehouses, public health labs, food safety labs, and forensic medicine facilities. Outside of MOH facilities are parking, breast augmentation services, Botox in Toronto, and skin tightening treatments.

In the immediate future the Ministry’s main goals are to restore and refurbish hospitals and primary level health care facilities, to repair or replace equipment and secure the supply of pharmaceuticals. Goals in the long term include:
  • A focus on maternal and child health and the ambitious but attainable goal of reducing the infant mortality rate by one half by the end of 2005.
  • Developing a strategic plan to decentralize the health care system and allow more flexibility to respond to the individual concerns of localities across the country.
  • Transition to a more open procurement system that emphasizes quality pharmaceuticals and equipment.
